Blending heritage charm with

contemporary efficiency

Mittagong Project in NSW, Australia

In the rural Southern Highlands of NSW, a classic country house has been meticulously transformed, seamlessly blending heritage charm with contemporary efficiency. The significant renovation involved collaboration between Building Designer Justin Dykes of Solis Haus and window fabricator Roman Zhukov of Integra Windows, using advanced products from aluplast’s IDEAL 4000 series.

“The original home had beautiful bones and a fantastic northern orientation, overlooking the Blue Mountains,” explains Dykes. “However, it lacked the thermal performance and layout the homeowners wanted for comfortable, modern living.” Roughly half of the original structure, including outdated additions and a garage, was demolished, making room for an expansive, strategically designed new wing.

A critical consideration for the project was its bushfire-zone setting, imposing stringent requirements. “Timber windows were impractical due to bushfire regulations,” notes Dykes. “uPVC frames emerged as the ideal solution because they offered compliance without sacrificing aesthetics.”

Enter Integra Windows with the aluplast IDEAL 4000 series, a uPVC system known for its robust profiles and design flexibility. “The IDEAL 4000 profile is solid, which is perfect for achieving the heritage style the clients desired,” says Zhukov. “They were seeking a classic heritage look, and we could integrate colonial bars within the double-glazing units, keeping the exterior glass surface smooth and easy to clean.”
This thoughtful detailing significantly reduced maintenance requirements—critical in the variable climate of the Southern Highlands. “The homeowners requested a premium finish that emulated painted timber without the ongoing upkeep,” Zhukov explains. “We recommended the aludec Traffic White lamination, which has a textured appearance and adds authenticity to the overall design.”

Beyond aesthetics, the performance of the windows and doors was paramount. “Our uPVC systems seal like a fridge,” Zhukov says. “Once the windows and doors are closed and the handles engaged, multiple locking points create a near airtight seal.” This sealing efficiency dramatically improves thermal performance, reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems. “The homeowners have commented on how much quieter and more thermally stable the home is now. When they heat or cool the house, it maintains that comfort much longer than anticipated,” Zhukov adds.

Strategically oriented to capitalise on northern exposure, the renovation incorporated extensive stonework, gable features, dormer windows, Juliet balconies, and a Heritage slate and copper roof. Internally, meticulous attention was given to interior finishes, especially in bathrooms, each uniquely designed by the homeowner, an interior designer. “Achieving consistency in the heritage feel throughout the home was vital,” says Dykes. “Every element, from glazing and roofing to insulation and finishes, had to complement each other.”

The collaboration between building designer, fabricator, and builder PM White Building produced a smoothly executed renovation. “It was a true partnership,” says Zhukov. “We fabricated approximately 30 windows and doors, plus additional glass panels. Our team installed the frames, with the builders ensuring structural integrity, and we returned for glazing and final adjustments.”

Reflecting on the project's success, Dykes highlights the synergy between advanced materials and traditional design principles. “Great design is about creating homes that stand the test of time, both stylistically and functionally,” he says.

“Here, uPVC windows and doors provided high performance without compromising the classic appearance the clients valued.”

Zhukov concurs, emphasising the suitability of the aluplast IDEAL 4000 system for Australian conditions. “We chose to work with aluplast because they consistently innovate and adapt to market needs,” he notes. “Their systems offer exceptional thermal efficiency, achieving U-values as low as 0.9, significantly outperforming aluminium windows. Coupled with the ease of maintenance and superior sealing, this makes it an ideal solution for discerning homeowners.”

This project exemplifies how heritage-inspired design can coexist harmoniously with modern, energy-efficient building practices. Through thoughtful planning, careful material selection, and close collaboration, the home now provides exceptional comfort and enduring beauty, showcasing sustainable, heritage-sensitive design and construction.
